Be sure to check your application matierials carefully! When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily removed with a speedy triage process. How? The same way any HR professional would. By passing over resumes where the objective didn’t match our job posting. By passing over candidates whose cover letters gave us causes not to hire them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating candidates whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by passing over candidates who didn’t bother to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.

So the great news is that job boards give you a sense of who is hiring, and for what kinds of jobs. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still try, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another thing to be aware of is how quickly you can be investigated on the net. As we Googled several job hunters, we ran into some personal web pages that were in questionable taste. Nothing crazy, but enough to rock our thoughts about who to employ.

Nobody can say I’m pleasantly comfortable as an “independent” (aka: naturally single) person and remain an honest woman. But, I’m not uncomfortable in that way, either. I only mention it here as an ear-catching little tidbit setting up the story I am prepared to discuss honestly.

This time last week I was walking the dog, Sandy, considering buying a membership to a dating service for Phoenix singles. You prolly couldn’t guess that, I type to the blogosphere as a delightfully single member of the matchmaking service. For real, and I almost don’t believe it myself! I like it! If you know me at all, you’re probably thinking, “Stop blabbering and tell me about it already.”

Here’s how it went down, I looked at this Great Expectations Dating site and liked what I saw. They’re for the honest singles who think dating should mean something.

Because I’d never been a fan of this silly social phenomenon my friends and my family have named “dating.” I faced it more than you know. Every night people pester, “Are you two serious yet?” and “You should date!”

“Ugh, and double ugh.” I reply, without missing a beat. “Not after that last blind date you set me up on.”

“Not true,” they deadpan. “You haven’t dated in a year, you wouldn’t know!”

Thankfully, that’s my sister (on a good day) Stacey McCarthy. She beams reality to my brain to put me back on course. People are always there . Can’t argue with that, and I thank her for it.

Back to the message of this post. As I selected from more than three hundred outfits (hah) and desirable, honest singles for my first Great Expectations date, a revelation hit me true.
