Parlay Position
Betting position in poker is a key factor in how a player proceeds with a hand. The player who is last-to- act is considered to have a substantial advantage over the other players because the last-to-act has seen what the other players do before the betting gets to the last position.
The player in last position can play a wider range of starting cards and has more opportunities to steal pots when there are only limpers or checking ahead of the last player to act. But just because a player is not in late position does not necessarily mean that a player can’t trump the late position advantage.
How can a player in early or middle position usurp the advantage from the last-to-act position? The answer is to use selective aggression and raise when you are out of position. Being the first to raise the betting from early or middle position often confers the same advantage as late position. Most often an early raise will force other poker players to fold.
When you raise from out of position, you may win the pot right away or least narrow to the field of contenders for the pot. If everyone folds, then your raise wins a small pot, but this can be crucial in online poker tournament play when you have to keep pace with blinds. Just winning the blinds once each orbit around the table will help you survive to the end.
When you’ve got a hand out of position that is worth betting, then a raise could win it for you or at least put you in the last-to-act position when the other players fold behind you.
